Heartbeats and Pillowtalk - 14/02/2021

17/2/2021

It’s been over 10 years and I didn’t know you could count the passing of time with heartbeats and pillowtalk.
We meet again and again on the crazy winding trail we call us.
Sometimes I know I should make more fuss.
Not every man gets a strong fine woman in his corner,

Then I remember I was never that guy and you said I should never change.

Strange how this life gives such unexpected turns,
Low key individual shifts that ripple where our lives intersect the universe.

On most counts, we came out lucky.

Although it doesn’t always feel that way when you’re knee deep in shit.
But there you have it.
Can’t always stay clean.
Damned if I aint the luckiest lugnet to find me a queen who don’t mind the smell.

You once asked if I ever tried to count the kisses we’ve shared.
After some mental gymnastics I realised it wasn’t enough.
My lips aren’t even tired.
Fraid’ I got to go now.
Time to add one more to that tally.

We Are Together

We Are Together
By Douglas Karson

We are together
In this unique time
We think of family and friends
Good times we spend
Warmth and whiskey around a fire
Excited children tearing paper
Carols and cuddles
Feasts and loosened trousers
Lights

We are together
In this special time
Despite distance our heart’s existence
Does not depend on time

Nor space
Love resides in a different place
It is there we share

Our holiday cheer

We are together
In our pursuits and our connections
Our hopes and our dreams
Our fears and our nightmares
Our homes and our communities
Perhaps now more than ever

We are together
Linked to one another
The spider’s web we built has caught us
Lockdown lost control and goodness knows,
My house

Has never been
So tidy.
Yet
We are together
Sharing this darkness
Beacons as cold deepens

Hope knows,
It will be light again.
Warmth will return.

We wait together.
Watching the world change
Feeling powerless in the face of mother nature
Appreciating all the mothers
And grandmothers
The fathers
Sisters
Brothers
Those we wish to give comfort
Those we’ve missed so painfully
We remind you
We are together

A face on a screen not the same thing
We need hugs
So we shrug and say
Next year
Next year will be better
Next year will be full of hope
Optimism keeps us going.
That and knowing
We are together

In this joyous season we count our blessings
We hold those near us tighter
We say thank you louder
We feast heartier
Sit smugly by the fire
Cosy and content
With memories of laughter and light
Firm in our conviction
We are together

There was a field
Empty
So we stopped
Picnic
With a small elephant print blanket
Me
With my son
And the birds
The grass
The flowers
The trees
The bush
The earth
The sky
Good company

I went out to the shop today
The sky was blue
Not a cloud for miles
Far as I could see
Which wasn't very far in fact
With the buildings
And trees blocking the view
While I walked, the birds did sing
They don't care
This is my one outing
And the wind blew
A warm strong breeze
Taking blossom petals to the air
Snow of pink
White
Green
Smelling of freshness and Spring
This is my one outing
On a perfect spring day
Where I am healthy and fed
I went out to the shop toda

    I love poetry.

It can be whimsical or epic, unbearably long or just two memorable lines, mature and dark or light and childish.
